Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 4-5 pounds beef brisket Choose a well-marbled brisket for better flavor and tenderness.
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Adjust sweetness according to preference.
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar Can substitute with balsamic or red wine vinegar.
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Preparation

  • Trim any excess fat from the brisket and rub it with a mixture of smoked paprika, ground cumin, black pepper, and salt.
  • In a skillet, heat some oil over medium heat, then add the sliced onions and sauté until caramelized, approximately 15-20 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Cooking

  • Place the caramelized onions in a slow cooker or Dutch oven and lay the brisket on top.
  • In a bowl, mix the brown sugar, soy sauce, beef broth, and apple cider vinegar, then pour this mixture over the brisket.
  • Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours in a slow cooker or cover and bake in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 3-4 hours.
  • Once done, let the brisket rest for about 20 minutes, then shred it and mix it with the cooking liquid.

Serving

  • Serve the pulled brisket on a platter, drizzled with some of the leftover sauce and topped with fresh herbs or pickled onions.

Notes

Leftovers make excellent sandwiches or tacos. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
