Ingredients
  

For the Beef Marinade

  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce for marinating
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce optional for marinating
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

For the Sauce

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce optional
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

For Cooking

  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil plus more for sautéing
  • to taste salt and pepper for seasoning

Instructions
 

Marination

  • In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, ginger, garlic, and sesame oil. Toss the beef strips in this mixture and let them sit for 10-15 minutes.

Cooking Onions

  • Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized. Season with salt and pepper, then remove from the pan and set aside.

Searing Beef

  • In the same skillet, heat 2 tbsp of vegetable oil over high heat. Add the marinated beef strips and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned.

Preparing Sauce

  • In a small bowl, whisk together remaining soy sauce, optional oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch. Pour this sauce over the beef and simmer until thickened.

Combining & Serving

  • Return the sautéed onions to the skillet and stir to combine. Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

For a twist, substitute beef with chicken, shrimp, or tofu. Add fresh bell peppers or snap peas for extra crunch. Serve with steamed broccoli or bok choy.
