Ingredients
  

For the Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef Preferably lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped Adds sweetness to the patties
  • 1 large egg Acts as a binding agent
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Enhances flavor
  • to taste Salt and pepper Season to your preference

For the Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For cooking the patties
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced Can use fresh or canned
  • 1/2 cup onion, sliced Adds flavor to the sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth Use low-sodium if preferred
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch To thicken the gravy
  • 1 tablespoon water To mix with cornstarch

Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix together the ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape this mixture into oval patties.

Cooking

  • Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the patties and cook them until browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Once browned, remove the patties from the pan and set them aside.
  • In the same pan, add the sliced mushrooms and onions. Sauté until they are softened and the onions become translucent.
  • Return the patties to the pan and pour in the beef broth. Allow the mixture to simmer for 10-15 minutes, letting the flavors meld together.
  • In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Add this mixture to the pan to thicken the gravy.
  • Plate the patties and generously spoon the gravy over the top before serving.

Notes

Serve with creamy mashed potatoes or buttered noodles to soak up the delicious gravy. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
