  • 8 oz elbow macaroni
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded Can substitute with a blend of cheeses.
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs For topping.

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the elbow macaroni until al dente for about 7-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until bubbly. Whisk in the flour until smooth, cooking for 1 minute.
  • Gradually pour in the milk while whisking constantly until the mixture thickens slightly.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and creamy.
  • Fold the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until well coated.
  • Transfer the cheesy pasta into a greased baking dish, top with panko bread crumbs, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

For a gourmet touch, consider adding truffle oil just before serving. You can also add vegetables like broccoli or spinach, or mix in cooked bacon or crab meat for a luxurious version.
