Beef and Onions

  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For sautéing
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

For Assembly

  • 4 pieces hamburger buns
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • to taste Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Cooking

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions and cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring often, until golden and caramelized.
  • Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  • Add ground beef and cook until fully browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks.
  • Drain excess fat from the skillet, then stir in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  • Let the mixture simmer for another 5 minutes to blend the flavors.
  • While the mixture is simmering, toast the hamburger buns until lightly golden.
  • Scoop the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, top with shredded Swiss cheese, and place the top bun.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley before serving, if desired.

Notes

These sloppy joes are best served hot and can be accompanied by a side of crispy fries, fresh salad, or coleslaw. Don't forget to have some extra napkins on hand, as they can get a bit messy.
