  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or lard Use either vegetable oil or lard for different flavors
  • 3/4 cup warm water Warm water helps activate the dough efficiently

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  • Add the vegetable oil (or lard) and warm water to the dry ingredients.
  • Knead the dough using your hands or a mixer until it is smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into small balls, roughly the size of a golf ball, and let them rest for 15 to 30 minutes.

Cooking

  • On a floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle.
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook each tortilla for about 1 minute on each side, or until golden brown spots appear.
  • Remove from the skillet and keep warm until ready to serve.

Notes

Store homemade tortillas in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months with parchment paper between each.
