  • 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and blanched Blanching helps maintain the beans' crunch.
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup 10.5 oz can.
  • 1/2 cup milk For creaminess.
  • 1 cup French fried onions, divided Add half to the mixture and use the other half as topping.
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms Optional for added flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon butter For sautéing mushrooms (optional).
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Optional for extra flavor.
  • to taste Salt Adjust according to preference.
  • to taste Pepper Adjust according to preference.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • If using mushrooms, sauté them in butter until tender.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Toss in the green beans (and mushrooms if using) until well-coated.
  • Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish.

Baking

  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until the dish is hot and bubbly.
  • Stir in half of the fried onions and save the rest for topping.
  • Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes until the remaining onions are golden brown.

Notes

Green Bean Casserole pairs well with roasted turkey or glazed ham. It can also be made vegetarian-friendly by using vegetable broth and cream soup alternatives.
