Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix the warm water, anise (if using), sugar, vanilla extract, melted butter, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the flour until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough until smooth, then cover and let it rest for about 30 minutes.

Frying

  • Roll the dough into thin disks and heat oil in a frying pan.
  • Fry the disks in hot oil until they are golden brown on both sides.

Syrup Preparation

  • Meanwhile, prepare the Piloncillo syrup by boiling the piloncillo cone with 3 cups of water, the cinnamon stick, and anise until fully dissolved.
  • Drizzle the syrup over the fried doughnuts or dust them with cinnamon sugar before serving.

Notes

Store doughnuts in an airtight container at room temperature for best freshness or freeze them for longer storage. For additional flavor, consider adding nutmeg or orange zest to the dough.
